How Accelerated Reader is Implemented at TCS
Accelerated Reader is not an instructional program, but an enrichment program designed to help students improve their reading ability. At TCS, we stress the individuality of each student. Each student has an individual goal for every quarter. Students work at their own pace according to their individual diagnostic assessment.
We emphasize reaching 100% of goal rather than points. In this way, every student can be 100% successful.
The program reemphasizes the classroom reading instruction by providing reading practice. Our goal at TCS is for every student to become an independent reader and develop good reading habits which follow them into higher learning.
What Parents Can Expect
Your child's AR journey includes these key components
STAR Test
Given three times each year
This diagnostic assessment is given at the beginning, middle, and end of the year to track the student's growth
Individual Goals
Individual goal set for each quarter based on student's diagnostic assessment results
Level-Appropriate Reading
Student will read books at the appropriate level as determined by their own diagnostic assessment (STAR)
Comprehension Quizzes
After finishing a book, student will take a comprehension quiz
The student will be given immediate feedback on his/her progress
Home Connect
Parents will be given immediate feedback at home through Home Connect
Reading Level Increase
Parents can expect an increase in student's reading level throughout the year
Rewards and Celebrations
Recognizing student achievements and milestones
Individual Recognition
- ✓ Teachers will reward individual successes at the classroom level
- ✓ Students reaching all three quarter goals are recognized in the Talon in May
Class Recognition
- ✓ Any class in which every student reaches 100% of their goal will be rewarded as a class
- ✓ Students who reach their goals for the first three quarters will be able to participate in a celebration at the end of the semester
